2001 Vintage Overview
The 2001 vintage was rated excellent across the whole of the Rioja region thanks to particularly healthy development of the vines. Rainfall was plentiful and well timed and spring frosts and summer hailstorms were limited and did not cause undue damage. Vineyard development was very satisfactory with a slightly early bud-burst, flowering and fruit-set. All these factors allowed us to achieve musts that were very aromatic, fruity, high in polyphenols and where the acidity and sugar were well balanced.
Tasting Note
Dark cherry red core with touches of brick red on the rim hinting at the time spent ageing in barrel. Aromas of spicy oak and eucalyptus as well as mature black and red fruit. Good balance between the tertiary aromas from the extended maturation and the developed fruit aromas. Good intensity and balance, soft, round tannins, and a long finish with hints of toast and liquorice.
